The United Nations estimates that between 2000 and 2004, $750 million U.S dollars worth of profit was generated from the mining of coltan. The average Congolese miner makes $200 U.S dollars a month.
Coltan is used for storing electrical charge. For this reason, it is therefore a vital component in the capacitors that control current flow in cell phone circuit boards. Coltan can’t be replace anytime soon.
For the farmers who left farming to mine coltan, I wonder if they have asked themselves if they can eat coltan? Another way to enslave people on short-sighted 'gains'–while local farming could feed populations who now have to rely on foreign 'charity'.
