‘The Black Parade’ (Book 1) by Kyoko M.

I love how the author created a kick-ass Black-Latina protagonist fighting demons inside and outside of herself. Jordan Amador became the first heroine of color in a book I have ever related to. In addition, I loved the supernatural elements, the action-packed storyline and Jordan’s love interest Michael. Not only does Michael help Jordan overcome her personal demons, but he also helps her develop new special abilities and treats her with respect. Also, the lack of insta-love and the pop culture references were refreshing.
