Tech is about connecting with people. For that reason alone most people are going to work with people they know or associate with at work. The tech field is mostly an all boys club and it’s predominately white for a reason—in the garages and start-up houses “dudes” came together to create something. They stuck together and connected with like-minded individuals .

“Participation in the open-source community is a function of comfort in the community,” says Betsey Haibel, a software developer from Washington, D.C. “Minorities have to create their own spaces and then branch out.”
