After graduating, Crumpler could only find work in Richmond, Va. In 1865, she worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau helping thousands of Black people who could not receive help from other medical institutions.  The postwar South was extremely hostile to Black physicians but she created a network that did charitable medical work in Black communities.
