5 Facts About the First Black Female Physician, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler

Beacon-Hill-Charmer

The North

After 15 years in Virginia, she moved back to Boston. Her life in Boston was different from her life when she was living in the south during the 1880s. Crumpler and her husband lived in an all Black middle class community. The history of this community reflected strong abolitionist beliefs even though the area was still divided by race and ethnicity. Crumpler more than likely would have lived in the North Slope area. During this time she retired from the medical field.
