We see it every day in the grocery store. The convenient self-checkout lanes might make our trips to the store easier, but these machines take away jobs that people may want and need. Since the creation of the modern assembly line by Ransom Olds in 1901 and later perfected by Henry Ford in 1913, manufacturing large machines has become easier. Today, there are manufacturing robots that have replaced human hands. In the 1950s and ’60s, many people relied on these jobs and many lived comfortably from them. Now those jobs are scarce, and cities like Detroit are feeling the effects.

When most people think of artificial intelligence (AI), they tend to think of Hollywood’s depiction of this scientific advancement — rebellious robots bent on world domination.

A few others may think of friendly human-like robot maids, and then even fewer think of their digital opponents in video games or thermostats that automatically adjust the temperature of their home.

The latter is the most accurate depiction.

Of course, you might not think that after hearing world-renowned physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking and SpaceX and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk explain their fears of artificial intelligence.

Musk has even donated roughly $10 million to causes aimed at keeping artificial intelligence safe and “beneficial.”

According to experts who actually spend much of their time working with AI, however, there is actually nothing to be afraid of.

When it comes down to it, they say, AI isn’t as smart as Hollywood may lead you to believe.

“The AI community as a whole is a long way from building anything that could be a concern to the general public,” said Dileep George, the co-founder of a prominent AI firm, Vicarious, according to Popular Science.

The director of AI research at Facebook, Yann LeCun, added that even with the many advancements that have been made with AI in recent years, giving human-like intelligence to machines has not even been remotely possible.

For that reason, many scientists who are familiar with current AI research are not fearful that their work will one day wipe humans off the face of the earth.

“What people in my field do worry about is the fear-mongering that is happening,” Yoshua Bengio, head of the Machine Learning Laboratory at the University of Montreal, told Popular Science. “There are crazy people out there who believe these claims of extreme danger to humanity. They might take people like us as targets.”

Bengio is just hoping that those fears won’t start driving away investors and ultimately start slashing away at how much funding researchers are able to obtain in order to continue making developments to AI.

Of course, not every AI fear seems to be quite as irrational as evil robots.

There are also concerns about what the future of AI means for blue-collar jobs.

Many large retailers, like Lowes, have recently started rolling out robotic sales associates.

While these robots are nowhere near close to eliminating the need for human assistance in the hardware store, it was certainly an eye-opener for just how far AI has come.

China-based company Hon Hai, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, recently announced that over the next three years it will plan to fire roughly 500,000 workers and replace them with robots who will be able to complete similar tasks and work for free.

This could cause a major spike in unemployment rates, especially for Americans who rely on blue-collar jobs.

“AIs will cause significant unemployment, but that doesn’t equate with poverty,” Neil Jacobstein, the head of AI at Singularity University, told the BBC.

As AI grows, other related tech jobs will grow as well. So what this means is that there actually could be more jobs becoming available, but they would require highly intelligent people with extensive backgrounds in tech and engineering, which could ultimately mean the average “working man” could be out of a job.

Another fear that has been expressed is about AI getting in the wrong hands.

James Barrat, an author and documentarian, explained that AI could be extremely dangerous if the person on the back end has ill intentions.

“Advanced AI is a dual-use technology, like nuclear fission,” Barrat told the BBC. “Fission can illuminate cities or incinerate them. At advanced levels, AI will be even more volatile and dangerous than fission, and it’s already being weaponized in autonomous drones and battlefield robots.”

So according to Barrat, the fear is not about the technology itself, but the person behind it.

Either way, AI is quickly growing and contributing to many new beneficial technologies. Moving forward, however, it will be key that the ethics and regulations regarding AI continue to expand just as quickly as the technology itself.

The Year of AI: 2014 Brings Impressive Advances and a Glimpse Into the Future of Artificial Intelligence

From speakers you can text to sales associate robots making their way through Lowe’s, the last year brought a variety of impressive technological advances that demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence (AI).

While we are still many generations away from seeing software that will be able to fully mimic human intelligence, we are now in an era where humans can have conversations and other interactions with technology in a way that wasn’t possible in the past.

Technology Review pointed to Microsoft’s Cortana as a standout example of how technology can now recognize, process and respond to human speech. The virtual assistant is essentially taking applications like Apple’s Siri to the next level.

Cortana is built into the mobile version of windows and actually learns about the person using the software over time.

While other voice recognition software from the past allowed users to launch apps or receive quick answers to simple questions about a celebrity’s age or what the weather is like, Cortana actually has the ability to control certain apps, connect reminders to specific people and accurately follow a series of questions and demands.

“After asking for ‘The best Mexican restaurants in Palo Alto,’ he could narrow down the candidates Cortana listed by asking ‘Which ones take reservations?’ and then ‘Call the second one,’ after making a decision,” Technology Review reported about Joe Belfiore, vice president of Microsoft’s operation system group, who presented the new software back in April.

The year also revealed the possibilities of using artificial intelligence to monitor homes through thermostats, security systems and more.

Technologies like the Nest thermostat, which recently entered its second generation of devices, actually learns the users’ preferred temperature, daily routine and energy costs.

After compiling enough information about its new owner, Nest adjusts accordingly without consumers having to think twice about touching the thermostat.

Then there was the introduction of Canary, the smart bot that can defend a consumer’s home from intruders without setting off unnecessary false alarms.

The security system is another artificially intelligent device that learns a family’s schedule and routine and adjusts accordingly.

For example, if the kids are always coming home from school around 3 p.m., the device will know to expect their arrival and won’t sound off immediately when they enter the door.

If the device detects any sort of unusual activity inside the home, it will send push notifications to the buyers’ mobile device alerting them of the new behavior.

Other new technologies from researchers at Facebook allow systems to scan different photos and tell if the same person is present in each photo.

Google also revealed a system that can describe images with short, simple sentences, essentially moving technology closer to having the ability to actually “see” as opposed to just “sense.”

Three main factors contribute to technology being able to function more and more like a human — parallel computation, big data and better algorithms.

The more efficiently technology is able to “think” in a parallel process, collect and store big data and function using better algorithms, the closer it becomes to being more human-like.

These are the reasons 2014 introduced the world to more accurate body trackers that allowed consumers’ motions in person to impact the progress of their video games, cars that were able to drive and park themselves and even Facebook news feeds and search engine results that were so accurate and personalized that many people grew uncomfortable with how smart technology could really be.

Perhaps the greatest AI superstar, however, is still a famous computer by the name of Watson.

Watson famously won a game of Jeopardy in the past, but this year it became incredibly close to breaking barriers in cancer treatment.

IBM announced that a version of its futuristic supercomputer is close to being able to use genomic data to choose personalized treatment plans for cancer patients.

The quickly advancing technology also has some experts predicting that we aren’t too far from seeing some of our wildest sci-fi dreams come to life.

According to Ray Kurzweil, the author of five different books on AI and the founder of futurist organization the Singularity University, we could even start seeing more human-like machine intelligence integrated into our daily lives by 2029.

Stephen Hawking Adds Validity to Fears of Better Artificial Intelligence Marking the ‘End of the Human Race’

In the midst of the debate about how dangerous technology can become if it continues to advance at such incredibly fast rates, Professor Stephen Hawking is siding with those who are deeply concerned about what the future of technology could mean for mankind.

Some people think the idea of robots destroying mankind is a far-fetched paranoia, while others believe this kind of future is much closer than most people would be willing to believe.

While there aren’t many claims to support a hostile robot takeover like many sci-fi flicks portray, there is enough evidence to suggest that the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) could have a drastic, negative impact on mankind.

“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race,” Hawking said, according to the BBC.

Hawking’s concerns are not that robots will launch a violent attack against the human race but rather that they will snatch jobs away from people and cause unemployment rates to skyrocket.

“It would take off on its own, and redesign itself at an ever-increasing rate,” he added.

Hawking went on to say that humans are “limited by slow biological evolution” and this would allow machines with advanced artificial intelligence to essentially take over the job market.

Hawking’s comments came during a conversation about revamping the technology he uses to communicate every day, which one tech entrepreneur believes is exactly why people should not fear technological advancements.

Rollo Carpenter, the creator of Cleverbot, a program that learns users’ past conversations and responds to text messages automatically, pointed out that there is a possibility that people could seriously benefit from advancements in AI and that society will have to be willing to take a risk.

“We cannot quite know what will happen if a machine exceeds our own intelligence, so we can’t know if we’ll be infinitely helped by it, or ignored by it and sidelined, or conceivably destroyed by it,” he told the BBC.

For most people, however, the idea of machines taking jobs away from Americans is enough to have them pass up on taking that risk.

Some stores have already started launching technologies that could possibly take jobs away from humans in the future.

Recently, certain Lowe’s stores introduced robot sales associates, known as OSHbots, that are able to assist customers with basic needs such as finding tools or checking prices on items.

For the average customer, that’s about all the help they will need.

The robots even have the ability to scan a screw or other tool that a customer comes in with and locate more of that item or similar items in the store.

As the robots continue to be upgraded over time, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched that certain stores will be able to drastically reduce how many human sales associates they need on the floor.

Another major concern in the digital age has been the accessibility that the Internet provides and the ability that tech-savvy hackers have that can allow them to steal personal information and breach top-notch security systems.

Hawking said that the Internet has grown dangerous for this very reason and that there needs to be an increased focus on making the Web more secure.

“More must be done by the Internet companies to counter the threat, but the difficulty is to do this without sacrificing freedom and privacy,” Hawking added.

With more and more Americans utilizing online banking, using virtual means to store private documents and the vast amount of information that is stored on every person’s device, the call to boost Internet security is more important now than it has ever been.
