Black Male Gamers Experience More Racism in Gaming
Playing video games isn’t always a pleasant experience. Online gaming can be a hotbed of overt racism and extreme cases of harassment. According to a 2011 study in the New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia, researchers followed a group of African-American gamers, whose voices and use of language identified them as Black to other players, on Microsoft’s online gaming platform Xbox Live. The study found Black gamers suffered racial abuse on a daily basis. White gamers are comfortable throwing around the N-word all the while forgetting it is just a game. Many of these gamers would probably not use racist diatribe so freely in real life.
