Playing as Black Characters May Not Change Perceptions of White Gamers
Ohio University researcher Brad Bushman conducted a study last year that concluded that “playing a violent video game as a black character reinforces harmful stereotypes that blacks are violent.” His study involved white video gamers playing as Black avatars in violent games like “Saints Row 2.” Those who played as a Black character were more likely to agree with a statement saying African-Americans would be as well off as whites if they only tried harder. After a study like this, it reinforces negative stereotypes and perpetuates ignorance. This comes down to the need for Black characters who are heroes instead of villains and criminals. There are positive Black characters, but there is always room for more.
