Scientists doing energy expenditure research on cheetahs have discovered that their biggest energy drain was not the energy expended chasing prey, but the ever-increasing distances they are forced to walk while searching for prey. The fastest land animal on Earth can reach up to speeds of 65 mph. It has become a favorite target for poachers, and populations of the animal are in decline. There are an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 left. Cheetahs are in North, West and Central Africa.
