Watkins is an associate professor of anthropology at American University in Washington, D.C. Her work focuses on the lives of Black people living in urban areas during the 19th and 20th centuries. She currently does ongoing research on the W. Montague Cobb skeletal collection, which is made up of D.C. residents who died in the city between 1930 and 1969.
