9 Ways to Spot a Fake Nerd

They wear black-rimmed glasses — not because they’re prescription but because they’re “the trend.” Celebrities such as rappers Kanye West and Jay Z and singer Justin Timberlake have made the look popular in mainstream culture.

They wear gingham prints. Elle Magazine’s article The Best Gingham Prints For Spring shows just how hipsters are commodifying nerd culture. You’re just as likely to catch the print on A-list celebrities walking the red carpet as you are to spot it on your local nerd.

They do not know the name of the characters on their shirts. When Transformers actress Megan Fox wears a crop top Star Wars T-shirt, you know it’s just not the same as if Urkel would’ve rocked it.

  1. Why did you include me in this ridiculous article? And I say ridiculous because upon initially reading it I thought it was supposed to be satirical as none of these merit the spotting of a “fake nerd”.
A big problem is that most people today do not take the time to learn about people before categorizing them. And a lot of “writers” do not even attempt to learn facts about someone before they post their picture and then write something completely inaccurate while grouping them in the falsity. Yes there are often posers at Comic Con, but there are also people that go there because they are part of the culture and it’s what they truly love and identify with. You just took a picture you stumbled upon on the Internet and made assumptions, which is one of the most injudicious things you could do as a writer.
And to refute what you were trying to conclude, I don't actually like Superhero movies. I've only watched a few of them just because I think it's interesting to see the director’s take on what happens in the comics, and I also like to spot inconsistencies. And also, I prefer DC over Marvel, and video games over comics. 🙂
