The eBay hack was concerning because many still believe that this was an inside job. Hackers used employee login credentials and managed to make their way into databases that contained all user records. Reports revealed that the hackers did manage to copy a “large portion” of information from roughly 145 million accounts earlier this year.
Heartland
The 2012 data breach of the major payment processing firm left credit and debit card information from more than 100 million people compromised. The company had to pay out about $110 million to Visa, MasterCard, American Express and other credit card associations to settle claims following the massive breach.
