Singleton is an associate professor at Syracuse University teaching anthropology and historical archaeology. In 1980, she became the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in the field of historical archaeology and African-American history and culture from the University of Florida. Singleton’s work focuses on the African diaspora in the Americas. For her lifetime contributions to the field, she was awarded the Society of Historical Archaeology J.C. Harrington Award in 2014. To this date, she is the only Black person to have that honor.
