Xbox Live, PlayStation Hackers Ruin Christmas For Many Gamers After Shutting Down Network

Sony hacked again

On Christmas morning excited gamers all across the country were unwrapping their new PlayStation 4s and Xboxes and getting ready to take their virtual adventures online.

Unfortunately, their excitement was quickly turned to disappointment when it was revealed that both the Xbox Live and PlayStation Network online services were experiencing outages at the hands of hackers.

PlayStation sent a tweet out to their disappointed followers explaining that they were aware of the outage and working quickly to resolve the issue.

“We’re aware that some users are having issues logging into PSN—engineers are investigating,” the tweet said.

Currently, Sony’s PlayStation Network is still offline but Microsoft’s Xbox Live has managed to recover.

To be clear, neither of the gaming giants have confirmed what caused the outages, but reports are pointing to a group of hackers identifying itself as Lizard Squad.

The group of self-proclaimed hackers did not actually manage to “hack” either of the gaming giants but instead have managed to launch a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

This simply stops would-be online gamers from logging on the networks but does not pose a serious threat to gamers or the companies.

Many people are also questioning the validity of the claims by Lizard Squad that they are truly the ones behind the outages.

The group has been adamant about getting recognition and even asked for gifts cards from Kim Dotcom, the founder of Megaupload.

It has not been confirmed if Dotcom complied with their wishes but the group did recently send out a tweet supporting Megaupload and Dotcom’s latest business ventures.

During an interview with WinBeta through an encrypted connection, Lizard Squad claimed that they started hacking the systems simply “for the laughs” but eventually realized they had a major opportunity on their hands.

Despite asking for gift cards from Dotcom, the group claimed the real purpose of the widespread outages was to force “these companies to upgrade the security on their networks,” Business Insider reported.

The group also claimed they had the ability to “take down NASDAQ if they wanted to damage the economy,” but said they simply weren’t interested in doing so.

While the outages came as an unfortunate surprise to many gamers, people who follow the group on social media weren’t so surprised.

Lizard Squad warned that they would take down the online networks over the holidays and they clearly followed through with the promise.

The group announced that they halted the cyber attacks, but as Sony struggles to get their services back up and running many believe it could simply be complications from the sheer amount of new users over the holiday season.

Either way, it’s a rough end of the year for Sony which was recently hacked as it prepared to release The Interview to theaters across the country.

The new comedy about a plot to take out North Korea’s Kim Jong Un sparked threats of violent attacks and led to many emails from Sony executives being released to the public.

It was never confirmed if North Korea was truly behind the massive hack but the very idea of it encouraged movie goers to rush to independent theaters to see the film—not only for entertainment, but as a proclaimed stance against terrorism.

LG Unveils Sleek Text-Message-Controlled Speakers That Eliminate Wireless Connectivity Hassles

LG Electronics is ready to revolutionize our music experience with speakers that can be controlled through text messages.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015 in January, the tech giant plans to showcase the Music Flow speaker system.

The line of new speakers will be able to accept text message commands through a service called Line.

These days most popular tech gadgets can be controlled by using our smart phones as remotes, but LG wants to take the smart phone capabilities a step further.

In addition to using a text message to pause, play and skip songs, the texting commands will also be able to tell the speakers what kind of music you’re in the mood for.

A message that reads something along the lines of “play music for party” will have the system switch over to your party playlist.

If you won’t be in the mood to jam for too long you can also text the speaker and tell it to “turn off music after one hour.”

LG also hopes to do away with the pesky connecting process that people currently deal with through Bluetooth technologies.

Going through the trouble of pairing devices and searching for the right one only to somehow end up connected to your neighbor’s printer is a funny but slightly irritating story that most people have heard once or twice—or at least some variation of it.

LG’s new speakers, however, will be able to detect when a smartphone or tablet gets about a foot away and will automatically connect to it and play any music that is playing on the phone.

“So you could be listening to music on your headphones on the subway ride home but the music will begin playing automatically from your living room Wi-Fi Sound Bar when you enter your living room,” LG said in a press release.

Of course, the usual means of connectivity will still be available such as Bluetooth and a home Wi-Fi network integration.

The Music Flow line is also stylishly designed to fit the taste of the average modern consumer who appreciates chic simplicity and clean lines.

The complete line of the new speakers includes “the company’s first battery-powered Wi-Fi Speaker (Model H4 Portable), advanced Wi-Fi Sound Bars (Models HS7 and HS9) and the Streaming 3D Blu-ray Player (Model BP550),” according to the press release, and all items are designed to be compatible with Android and iOS devices.

Marvel Confirms ‘Halo: Nightfall’ Star Mike Colter Will Play Luke Cage in ‘A.K.A Jessica Jones’

Marvel confirms Jessica Jones cast

From the video game-inspired world of Halo to the comic universe of Marvel, Mike Colter will take on the role of Luke Cage in Marvel’s A.K.A Jessica Jones, scheduled to air on Netflix in 2015.

Colter is certainly no stranger to taking on fantasy driven worlds as he is currently starring in the Xbox Originals series Halo: Nightfall as Jameson Locke.

His newest role, however, will have him starring alongside Krysten Ritter as both actors will attempt to bring the story of Jessica Jones to life.

Jones is the super-powered heroine whose life changed after she was in a car accident that left her doused in chemicals.

Jones went into a coma but when she awoke she eventually realized she had super powers.

As Luke Cage, Colter will be playing Jones’s super strong husband who was once locked up for a crime he didn’t commit.

Luke Cage casting confirmed

Cage’s unique experiences create several emotional layers to the character and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg says she has faith that Colter will bring that to the life.

“Mike embodies the strength, edge and depth of Luke Cage,” Rosenberg, who is also the executive producer, said, as reported by Marvel.com. “We’re excited to have him bring this iconic Marvel character to life.”

It’s an important role for Colter as he will essentially be introducing the mainstream media world to Cage.

“Fans have longed to see Luke Cage and in Mike we’ve found the perfect actor,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Television, as reported by Marvel.com. “Viewers will get to meet Luke Cage in ‘Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,’ and experience why he is such an important super hero in the Marvel mythos.”

With comic book-inspired films and shows reaching an all-time peak in popularity, now is as good a time as any to release the Jessica Jones series.

Of course, many blerds might argue that this is about more than just adding another comic book adaptation success to Marvel’s resume.

This is yet another project by the comic giant that will bring diversity to the gang of Marvel super heroes in mainstream media.

It’s a mission Marvel has been pretty adamant about after casting Black actor Michael B. Jordan to take on the role of the traditionally white character Johnny Storm, known best as the Human Torch.

Then there was also the announcement that The Falcon will take over as the new Captain America, marking the first Black Captain America in the comic’s history.

This was a particularly important portrayal of a Black character, according to Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Axel Alonso.

During a recent interview with CBSN Alonso explained that, “the significance of an African-American man dressed in red, white and blue is not lost on the public.”

“It’s caused a lot of interesting debate, but this is the world in which we live,” Alonso added.

Marvel has also made other serious shakeups to boost diversity by introducing a female Thor and a Pakistani-American teen as the new Ms. Marvel.

NASA’s Plans For A Cloud City Above Venus Could Have People Living Like the Jetsons

Nasa Plans for Cloud City

After years of exploration efforts focused on getting human life on Mars, NASA is ready to bring Venus back into the conversation with a permanent city floating high above Earth’s closest neighbor.

NASA has unveiled the concept for the floating city, deemed Cloud City, that would allow humans to live above Venus since it is impossible for them to live on the planet’s surface.

The average person discussing the possibilities of life on another planet tend to set their sights on Mars, despite the fact that it’s actually not the closest planet to Earth.

Venus is closer to Earth but the surface conditions on the planet make it inhabitable for human life.

Venus has an atmospheric pressure more than 90 times greater than that of Earth and temperatures that soar to more than 860 degrees Fahrenheit.

It also has a atmosphere composed mostly of carbon dioxide, a very small amount of nitrogen and a cloud layer composed of sulphuric acid.

All these things mean humans can’t live on the planet’s surface—but NASA believes people could live comfortably floating above the planet instead.

Cloud City would be floating about 30 miles above the planet and people would be living on a High Altitude Venus Operational Concept (HAVOC) spacecraft.

Functional plans for a permanent Cloud City are still in the works but for now humans would be able to live above Venus for about 30 days before returning to Earth.

The idea, for now, also open to the average person looking for a literal out-of-this-world vacation destination.

Astronauts would be the only ones welcome in Cloud City for the purpose of collecting data about the planet.

The temperatures and pressure on-board the HAVOC spacecraft would allow astronauts to stay above the planet while being subjected to conditions similar to what they would face on Earth.

The atmosphere at that altitude will also offer protections from solar radiation comparable to living in Canada.

After the initial round of probing for 30 days, NASA hopes to send teams of astronauts up to Cloud City to live for at least an entire year.

NASA has already made plans for transportation in Cloud City as well with a design that will essentially have people living like the famous cartoon family of the future – The Jetsons.

The design would allow astronauts to leave the main HAVOC spacecraft and further explore in Venus’s atmosphere.

Cloud City itself would be a fixed city but solar-powered Zeppelins would be used for further exploration.

NASA tells IEEE Spectrum that it could be another decade or two before Cloud City actually comes to fruition but experts believe further exploration of Venus could help advance efforts to get life on Mars.

“Venus has value as a destination in and of itself for exploration and colonization, but it’s also complementary to current Mars plans,” said Chris Jones of the Langley Research Center, according to CNET. “If you did Venus first, you could get a leg up on advancing those technologies and those capabilities ahead of doing a human-scale Mars mission. It’s a chance to do a practice run, if you will, of going to Mars.”

As Tech Industry Battles a Serious Diversity Problem, DigitalUndivided Brings Much Needed Urban Population to Tech Space

In the midst of a serious diversity problem plaguing the tech industry, DigitalUndivided founder Kathryn Finney is bringing perhaps the rarest demographic for the tech space into the field: Black women.

In an industry that not only fails to deliver on racial diversity but gender diversity as well, Black women are extremely rare in the technology space. But DigitalUndivided is fighting to put an end to that.

“We want to see more urban entrepreneurs, especially Black women, in tech,” Finney told Atlanta Blackstar. “Through our FOCUS Fellows program, we provide Black and Latino women founders and co-founders with the networks and knowledge to build successful companies.”

That’s exactly what DigitalUndivided is all about—making sure urban entrepreneurs have the skills and access to resources they need to achieve great things in the tech space.

Members of the FOCUS Fellows program have gone on to obtain “leadership positions at companies as diverse as Uber, Facebook and Chicago Infrastructure Trust,” she said.

For quite some time, DigitalUndivided has been helping the tech space become more diverse while embarking on a mission to increase the amount of urban tech entrepreneurs. It’s a mission about which Finney herself has good reason to be passionate.

As an African-American woman, she has experienced first-hand what it’s like to be the rare breed in such an important field of work.

“All the companies I’ve started have been because of personal need,” Finney said before explaining her extensive history in the tech and digital media space. “…In 2006, I was looking to capitalize on my platform and join one of New York’s first tech incubators. There I learned first-hand the challenges that people of color, especially women, face if they want to break into the tech space.”

While Finney’s career has led her to a ton of firsts—first style blogger to get a book deal, one of the first style bloggers to be accredited for Fashion Week, first time appearing on a national morning show—diving into the tech space introduced her to a different kind of first.

“It was the first time in my life that I was in a community where I was expected to be ‘less than’ solely because of my race and gender,” she said. “I had white male colleagues tell me that I couldn’t relate to other Black women because I had an accountant.”

That experience is exactly what turned into the nationally recognized brand that Finney is the head of today.

“That experience stuck with me,” she said. “…So I formed DigitalUndivided in 2012 and we held our first project FOCUS100, in October 2012.”

DigitalUndivided is the type of business that has the potential to revolutionize the tech industry and change the face of an industry that has been dominated by white males for years.

Of course, the work is far from being done. Finney said people of color will have to be more assertive when it comes to breaking down the barriers to an industry that has shunned them for years.

“As people of color we often want people to ‘invite’ us into spaces and spend a lifetime waiting for that invitation,” she said as she shared her advice for other Black people looking to become tech entrepreneurs. “Success comes to those who show up, with or WITHOUT, an invite.”

She also encouraged aspiring tech entrepreneurs to embrace failure, cultivate relationships and forget all about the naysayers who don’t believe in their talent.

BMW Moves Us Even Closer to Cars that Can Park Themselves

Thanks to BMW, each of us may be closer to living out our inner James Bond. BMW is currently developing technology that would allow consumers to park their car with nothing more than a smartwatch.

BMW’s i3 car, which will be on display at the 2015 International CES in Las Vegas in January, will integrate smartwatch technology with the vehicle and allow it to park itself without crashing—most of the time.

The “Remote Valet Parking Assistant” will operate through an app that will send the car on its way to park itself while the car’s owner goes on about their way.

The car is still just a prototype for now, but it already shows great promise for the future of hi-tech luxury vehicles.

Lasers on the car will scan the surrounding environment to help the vehicle avoid any nasty collisions but BMW warns that right now that feature isn’t full proof just yet.

The car had its fair share of minor bumps and scrapes during test runs and the company’s press release said that “entirely collision-free driving” is still only a “possibility.”

While possibilities of a collision will still be something consumers have to worry about, the press release promises that the car won’t be running into large columns or other cars.

“If the vehicle approaches a wall or a column too quickly, the system brakes automatically to prevent the threat of collision,” the press release said. “The vehicle is brought to a standstill very precisely with centimeters to spare.”

This isn’t the first time BMW has been showing off cars that can essentially drive themselves.

In both 2009 and 2011 they tested “highly automated” cars, and they are now getting closer to making that a reality – although it will certainly take quite a few years before consumers are running errands without even having to take a glance at the road.

The futuristic i3 is also sporting other impressive features such as a navigation system that will not rely on GPS signals, 360-degree collision avoidance, and an early version of an Emergency Stop Assistant that will detect if the driver has collapsed from a medical emergency and steer itself safely off to the side of the road and initiate an emergency call.

Latest Eye Scanning Technology Doesn’t Show Much Promise for Keeping Hackers At Bay

New eye-scanning technology seemed to be a beacon of hope for consumers who wanted to feel more secure in the digital age but it seems as if even these devices won’t be enough to keep dedicated hackers away.

On the surface, it seems like a great idea—trade in passwords for technology that can scan a feature that is truly unique to each user.

From phone apps to Eyelock’s Myris, many devices have hit the market to promise to keep hackers away with technology that will scan a user’s iris to identify them.

Because each person’s iris is unique, even from their other eye, it certainly seemed like a full proof plan, but the technology still has a ways to go before it will really be considered a serious security tool.

Eyelock’s Myris is the most popular of such devices and while its design is appealing and smart, there is a major loophole in the way the technology functions.

Users are still able to enter a password in order to bypass the Myris completely.

While an annoying pop up will appear until the user passes the iris scanning or updates their security information, there is still nothing stopping a hacker from sifting through files and personal documents because they managed to obtain your old password.

This, of course, does not discredit the technology completely.

It simply means that there is a ways to go before it can actually boast its ability to help fight off hackers—and even then some users just weren’t too impressed with the potential of what Myris and other similar technologies could do.

“So how will this help with the hacks of targets and walmarts,” one KKTV viewer asked in a comment online.

The technology is currently being developed to work for ATMs and security checkpoints, but so far it doesn’t seem as if this technology will come close to putting an end to shoppers’ fears of their credit card information getting stolen because of a successful cyber attack on their favorite retailer.

To be clear, those cyber attacks are extremely complicated and will never be solved with a roughly $300 consumer security device.

Other online readers were skeptical about how slight changes in appearance could impact the technology’s ability to function.

“Have a cold, look sick, got a rash? Well too bad, looks like you aren’t getting into your own equipment until you’re better,” another comment said.

That doesn’t seem to be the case here – well not with the Myris at least.

That technology is not saving the image of your eye, it is saving the unique pattern of your iris, which wouldn’t change if users become ill or have a rash.

Then there is also the fact that as long as someone can figure out your password, they can still technically gain access to whatever you were trying to keep protected. In that case, the Myris won’t be keeping anyone permanently locked out of their equipment under any circumstances.

When it comes down to it, in the battle between consumers and small-time hackers the Myris and other consumer iris scanning technology is an interesting line of defense but it certainly isn’t the most effective one for now—though they certainly could be as these technologies continue to develop over the years.

Poor Hygiene Behind Fitbit Charge Skin Irritation Claims, Not Product Materials

Skin irritation claims fitbit charge

After numerous complaints about skin irritation issues from Fitbit Charge users, the company has released a statement that claims the problem is not with their materials and likely due to problems with consumer hygiene.

The company is in no way suggesting that consumers are simply filthy and unkempt but instead suggests that they are making common mistakes that many people tend to make when it comes to wristbands and jewelry that stays on for a long time.

“The reactions we are seeing with Charge are not uncommon with jewelry or wearable devices that stay in contact with the skin for extended periods,” said Fitbit CEO and co-founder James Park, according to Engadget. “According to our consulting dermatologist, they are likely from sweat, water, or soap being held against the skin under the device, or from pressure or friction against the skin and should resolve quickly when users take a break from the device, usually within hours or days.”

While the materials used for the FitBit Force were responsible for skin irritation issues in the past, Park insists that isn’t the case this time around.

“While Force’s housing and band were held together with adhesive, which was determined to be the cause of nearly all allergic reactions, Charge’s housing and band are held together with screws, completely eliminating the potential for any adhesive to contact the skin,” the statement continued.

He also said that the company took the product through “extensive testing” to ensure all users could “safely wear and enjoy Charge.”

As with any watch, ring, armband or other accessory that is in direct contact with skin for long periods of time, Park says users will need to take the device off from time and time and make sure it has a loose fit when they are wearing it.

Also, keeping the skin underneath the band clean is an essential part of the general upkeep.

“We are encouraging anyone wearing an activity tracking wristband, regardless of the brand, to follow four key elements for maximum enjoyment: keep it clean, keep it dry, keep it loose, and give your wrist a break,” Park said. “We recommend wearing the band loosely enough that it can move back and forth on your wrist. We have developed guidelines for our products with our team of dermatologists to educate the public on how they should wear and care for their device and keep their skin happy.”

The company also pointed out that they had a very limited amount of complains about the skin irritation issues with the Charge compared to the Force.

This is yet another reason why the company believes the products used to make the activity monitoring wristband are not at fault, because of the scarcity of complaints that have made their way to their office.

The company promises to “continue to monitor this issue.”

5 Incredibly Insulting Defenses of Nerd Racism

 file_172599_0_ultimatespideymiles658

‘It’s Not About Race’

Not only do these arguments always turn out to be implicitly racist, but they usually directly contradict themselves. In the midst of trying to defend not wanting any of their favorite superheroes to be depicted as Black, some people claim that the argument has nothing to do with race – a claim that’s impossible because the conversation in and of itself is indeed about race. One comment on a message board said, “I’m not for changing Spiderman to a black dude. This isn’t about race and it wouldn’t matter if Spiderman wasn’t such an iconic character. Change Daredevil to a black guy, no one would care …. Spiderman is the second most popular superhero of all time trailing ONLY Superman in his awesomeness.” So there you have it, it’s just the awesome characters who can’t be changed to Black characters — but it has nothing to with race and everything to do with how awesome one race is allowed to be portrayed.
